Neuhaus on County Legislature Vote to Approve LDC for Valley View
KINGSTON, N.Y. -- "Employees of the soon-to-be sold Golden Hill Health Care Center were informed on Tuesday that their days as county employees are numbered.
Most, however, are expected to be kept on by the facility's new owner.
In a letter from county Personnel Director Brenda Bartholomew, Golden Hill employees were told their final date of employment with the county "will not be less than 30 days" from Tuesday. But because no closing date for the sale of the county-owned nursing home has been set, a final date of county employment could not be provided.
Bartholomew said the letter was "a standard part of the transition process." The county's labor contract with the Civil Service Employees Association, which represents the employees of the nursing home, requires that the county give employees a minimum of 30 days' notice of a layoff.
The 280-bed facility in Kingston is being sold for $11.25 million to a partnership comprising Dr. Anthony J. Bacchi, Martin Farbenblum and Edward O. Farbenblum, purchasing the facility under the names Golden Hill Acquisition Corp. and Golden Hill Planning Corp. The group was selected from among six bidders for nursing home.
Because the facility is being sold, all Golden Hill employees, numbering about 350, will be laid off by the county. County Executive Michael Hein said, though, that, under the terms of the sale, the group agreed to hire the majority of the facility's current employees.
Hein said "a great focus" is being placed on ensuring "the residents (of Golden Hill) are not displaced, that the concerns of their families are addressed and that the vast majority of current employees receive job offers from the new owners."
In April, the state Public Health and Health Planning Council approved the "certificate of need" application that cleared the way for the county to sell the Golden Hill Health Care Center. That approval paves the way for the state Department of Health to issue the certificate and for title of the nursing home to be transferred."
Do you have enough confidence in the County Executive that he will have "a great focus" for the employees to be hired by a private entity? Do you believe that most of the employees are going to wait around to see what happens? What do you think is going to happen to the quality of care with less than optimum staffing levels?
Is creating uncertainty a great leadership trait? No! Nice job steering the helm, "Admiral"!

Goshen, NY Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus today released the following statement after the county legislature’s vote regarding the Valley View Center for Nursing Care and Rehabilitation.
:
“Today the Orange County Legislature decided on a responsible path to keep Valley View open and providing care to our seniors. I stated during my campaign that I would seek to transfer Valley View to a local development corporation because I believe it is a way we can keep Valley View open and provide care to seniors for years to come. Most importantly, residents of Valley View will remain residents of Valley View. Ulster County has successfully proven that the LDC model works, and we can make it work in Orange County as well."
###
Well, nieces and nephews, your Auntie did find this press release in the archives on the Orange County website not on the main page as before.
And the CE did NOT make it evident during his campaign, that he was considering an LDC. The only place he mentioned it was in his "platform" document tucked away in an obscure place on his website. I have heard from many seniors and veterans that he stated he would keep Valley View in County hands. I guess he likes Seniors and Veterans, as long as they are not in Valley View.
Here are some more pearls of wisdom from Stevie Wonder:
"My administration has been negotiating with Valley View’s union on a new agreement after their previous contract expired. At this writing, no new concessions have been forthcoming from the union, and in fact they are demanding retroactive raises." Press release 4-2-14
"A November 10, 2012 article in the Times Herald-Record noted:
“The union representing employees at Orange County’s nursing home offered major concessions on Friday to lower the cost of running the facility and induce lawmakers to keep it in county hands. Unfortunately,, while concessions were promised, they never materialized
.CSEA leaders are still seeking raises for their members"
This is from the FAQ portion of the April 4th press release
.
First of all, these statements about the CSEA are simply not true. From these two statements, it seems like the CE is not in love with the CSEA.
Our Mr.Wonder makes many references to Ulster County so let's take a look. Here is an article from the Daily Freeman last year. Is this how you do "union busting"? (more to come on Golden Hill)
