The document has been submitted; The Village of Kiryas Joel
has submitted a petition signed by more than the requisite number of voters to
form the Town of North Monroe. Included with the petition is the Formation of North
Monroe exhibit book which contains in Exhibit D, the “Statement of Reasons for
Change” If you haven’t read it yet, you should.
This two-page document is packed full of interesting
comments. Let’s take a look.
It starts with a narrative of the stats regarding population
and then continues with a description of Satmar Hasidic Jews and their
religious and cultural needs, which clearly shows that the creation of this new town is for those religious and cultural purposes.
"...services unique to this community and not available in most other parts of the County including, among others, municipal sewer and water systems... " But that is what we are trying to tell you, it is
not available in your location either!!! We're tapped out!
"...Yiddish speaking fire and emergency services" We were not aware that Mombasha and the other fire companies that provide mutual aid, speak Yiddish. The Village must and currently relies on outside fire companies to respond to most fires. (The village firefighters do not meet the minimum 'dress code' requirements because of things like facial hair and typical forms of dress.)
Remember this is their document! (the Village of Kiryas Joel government). It does cause us to wonder:
What about the First Amendment?
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
This brilliant piece of writing in the first amendment protects religion from the government AND the government from religion. A nice plan. It is what allows people in the US the freedom to practice their own religion and not impose it on everyone else through government. It is supposed to ensure a secular government.

KJ is a SEGREGATED community looking for
legitimacy. Can you imagine any other “group” seeking to form a municipality
based on the criteria of religion and culture? The outrage would be deafening!
The text continues with the desire of non-satmars in the
area who desire to live in less dense developments and the tensions that have
occurred over “differing lifestyles” that could now be “ameliorated by the
division of the existing Town of Monroe into two different towns.”
As stated, that is not the real problem and definitely not the solution. since in about 10 years, the new “Town of
North Monroe" will reach its maximum capacity and this starts all over again. And
the “block vote” effect will not be diminished but maybe even enhanced. State and
Federal political hacks will court the Satmar still, looking for the votes of
an entire town! (But it will make it easier
for us to see just who is getting that block vote).
There is no mention of the fees to be collected for each
home/unit, the money that goes into the coffers benefiting certain members of their
religious "government" and the developers, but definitely NOT the people. (There is a lot of money
to be made and that is the real driving force for expansion)
Choice? Grow as we see fit? This formula doesn't let those non-satmar grow as they see fit, which is at a lower density that does not over burden the environment.
Don’t believe the BIG LIE. This new town formation is just
an end run around annexation to get an additional 300+ acres into their
community.. Ms. Convers and United Monroe have it right.
An anti-constitutional formation of a municipality and growth that is not due to just “natural growth” but
is also due to the influx of Satmar from other areas, even from South
America.
As a Village, KJ has given us inaccurate population
projections; a history of severe environmental violations; a lack of
communication with its neighbors and excessive Federal and State funding for
projects not completed. With such an abysmal track record just how will that be
improved by becoming a Town?
Auntie and the Team think we should learn a lesson from
Bloomingburg in Sullivan County where a proposed development of 125 homes and a
golf course was really intended to be a home to 5000 families all along.
If a community’s practices cause self-inflected hardship,
just how responsible should the rest of us be?
Think about that Mr. Amo!
Amos (typo theirs) said Kiryas Joel has been in existence since the mid-1970s “and is
not going away.” The growth in the village “is real. We all see the
cultural clashes escalating daily. We must do something,” he said.

As the OC legislator for the Village of Kiryas Joel and a non-satmar, who do you think would be in a better position for "doing something"?
Just what have you been doing for the past 20 years that you have been in office as an OC Legislator, Mr. Amo?
it is much easier to say someone should be doing something than to actually do it.
ReplyDeleteRight on cue, today in the TH Record, Amo and the "Village Administrator" (the only one in NYS BTW) side by side editorials on why the coalition of municipalities should stop the litigation against KJ and open up some dialogue, negotiate and compromise.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it someone said about negotiating with someone who says "What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine"
