Legislative Lingustics for November 7th 2017

Dear Nieces and Nephews:

Election Day is closer. And while there is no presidential race for your consideration, the local races are even more important now than they ever have been. November 7th! Mark your calendar.

The County races bring an opportunity to get away from the blatant propaganda and messaging offered by the current administration. The County races bring an opportunity to change from this ridiculous agenda that serves no one but those selected elected that have the county reins.

A common thread in the Republican incumbent races for Legislature is the co-opting of a cause (s) that have proven to resound with the voters and putting their cronyism and self serving activities “out there” as something of which to be proud.

Whether it is “experience matters” “proven experience” or “during my tenure” written on the campaign materials of many incumbents seeking county positions again, it is pure drivel.

One of the saddest candidates for Orange County Legislator is incumbent James DiSalvo, who had NOTHING of his own to list as an accomplishment. He lists things that have occurred during his time in the legislature as if he had something to do with it. And when you look at his “accomplishments and items I have supported” you see that it is more of the later.

All in the passive tense. Orange County tax rate is down” not “I sponsored legislation to help bring tax rate down” Why? because he did nothing. Just showing up to meetings and voting is something anyone can do. We expect more. (And during his tenure as a Village Trustee and a Town Councilman, he was similarly unremarkable.)

Paul Ruszkiewicz, John Vero, Steve Brescia are so cocksure of reelection that they have not bothered to create a campaign website (or at least an easily found one; Auntie had no interest in looking after two minutes of a search) other than their respective facebook pages. Barry Cheney has a website but when you look closely, you see it hasn’t been updated since 2013.

Auntie and the Team came across many palm cards and mailers (campaign literature) this season. Katie Bonelli, who sold out her own Town of Blooming Grove and the Town of Woodbury, (She also represents part of Woodbury) with her yea vote on the referendum vote for Monroe*, is the former OC Republican Secretary who answered and still answers to William Deprospo, former Orange County Republican Party Chairman. She is the Chair of the OC Legislature Rules Committee and as the Chair of this powerful committee, Katie has circumvented or blocked most initiatives of the Democrats in OC. Not exactly playing nice is it? But she, according to her campaign literature, “led the process of revising the Code of Ethics twice in the last four years.” Why? Didn’t get it right the first time, Katie?

But what is really irksome is the audacity of these candidates to use Valley View as a campaign issue!!!
Katie Bonelli has “supported much needed capital improvements at Valley View rehabilitation Center”

James DiSalvo wrote “Valley View is running more efficient and serving folks of Orange County”

Paul Ruszkiewicz has “The future of Valley View was uncertain..During my tenure…Valley View has turned around” on his palm card

Believing that these legislators had something to do with the “turnaround” of Valley View while still owned by the County, is like believing that Steve Neuhaus really did create jobs and turn the economy around in a single handed fashion. Just like he, as County Executive, increased the number of passengers at Stewart Airport by “attracting” Norwegian Air to Stewart. All by himself!

Better not tell Lou Heimbach. (If you do not know this former OC Executive’s role in the establishment of Norwegian Air at Stewart, just google)

To sell:
L. Stephen Brescia (R,C), Chairman of the Legislature, District 9: Town of Montgomery, Village of Maybrook, Town of Wallkill
Melissa Bonacic (R,C), Majority Leader, District 2: Village of Otisville, Greenville, Middletown, Mount Hope, Wallkill and Waywayanda
Michael Amo (I), Independence Party Leader, District 1: Village of Kiryas Joel, Monroe and Woodbury
Paul Ruszkiewicz (R,C,I), District 3: Towns of Minisink, Warwick and Wawayanda
Curlie W. Dillard (D), District 4: Town and City of Newburgh
Katie Bonelli (R,C,I), District 5: Town of Blooming Grove, Village of South Blooming Grove, Monroe and Woodbury
Barry J. Cheney (R), District 8: Towns of Tuxedo and Warwick and the Villages of Greenwood Lake, Tuxedo Park and Warwick
John S. Vero (R), District 10: Town and Village of Chester and Northern Portion of the Town of Warwick
Kevin W. Hines (R,C,I), District 12: Cornwall, Blooming Grove and New Windsor
Dennis W. Simmons (R,I,C), District 13: Deerpark, Mount Hope and Port Jervis
James DiSalvo (R,I), District 14: Town of Highlands and parts of Woodbury and Monroe
Leigh J. Benton (R,C,I), District 16: Town of Newburgh

Now, that is a real “turnaround”.

*Only Monroe can vote on the creation of the Town of Palm Tree even though it will affect the other towns as well.

PS
"You're not going to like it," Brescia said. "There will probably be a lot of layoffs." But due to the early retirement buy outs, such massive lay offs did not occur. And that too, was NOT Steve’s idea, was it?

Found this article from 2011 quite interesting as it profiles a time in Goshen when our CE and his 2nd in command, both now running unopposed for office..Edw. Diana and James O'Donnell were not very well viewed for their lack of performance during Hurricane Irene.

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/goshen-ny/TJ1O86LDH9N1MCCTJ/anyone-else-fed-up-with-diana-and-odonnell.

There were many questions surfacing then...where was Eddie, why did O'Donnell hold closed, illegal meetings and even mention that O'Donnell's political career was over. And now, here we have both of these political dinosaurs wanting to "get back into political action". Who are we kidding people. This is another attempt to do more sabotage to this county, like we really need more corruption. Both are being handed these posts as a gift on a silver platter. And you the tax payers of OC just keep voting these same politicians back into office. Auntie just listed all their names and their non-accomplishments. Their allegiance is not to the people they represent, at the end of the day it is to one man.

What a joke, trying to take credit for saving Valley View nursing home when all they did was VOTE to sell and NO other work or thought went into it at all. Some others put HUNDREDS of hours of work into saving it but don't run around trying to get credit.
All of then should be voted out, but sad to say that they will all be in again, most because they have no oppont capable of runing a race to inform people of who they are. (that is true down here in warwick) ---- Sad!

The race for Bonacic's seat is one to watch. 3 candidates who despise each other put on quite the show. One a convicted felon. You can't make this stuff up.

While we are at it, how about Wm. DeProspo running un-opposed for County Judge. Tell me how he can be impartial hearing cases, since his long arm of corruption was involved in all the dirty deals made, especially with Valley View and every politician in OC. What a set-up if ever there was one.

Ruszkiewicz tweeted the following before the last election:

#ValleyView: keep it open, one way or another. My grandfather, who was cared for there, would want it that way. #WTBQ #interview

#ValleyView: Work with @Cheney4Orange8 to keep it open and in County hands. Work w/Admin and unions to keep it running smoothly. #ocny #ld3

He does have a campaign website. After the last election it was quite dormant until the mid summer of this year. This is what it said about Valley View before he scrubbed and changed it:

Valley View Nursing Home

Valley View Nursing Home is an exceptional facility, and an important asset to the County. My own grandfather was a resident at Valley View for years, and I'm grateful for the excellent care he received during his time there.

I am committed to working to keep Valley View Nursing home open as a county-run facility as long as it is financially feasible, which I believe it is. With the new administrator, costs have come down and occupancy has gone up. The Legislature absolutely did the right thing by voting to fund Valley view for an additional year. It is projected that Valley View will still have to be supplemented approximately $14M from surplus funds, which is an improvement from $20-$22M the past few years. If we can continue in that positive direction, we can continue to keep Valley View as a county-run facility without issue.

He then proceeded to vote twice to sell it. So much for the great care grandpa received.

Smh.

What is amazing to me is the fact that, to the best of my knowledge, he has never addressed his flip flop. The fact that he obviously has not needed to address it is stunning to me.

I’m livid about this for personal reasons. My Mom was recently hospitalized twice for a very large ulcer and an intestinal blockage. She was first released briefly to a private care facility that provided zero care and she was allowed to moan she wanted to die for an hour in the bathroom because of extreme pain. After another brief stint back at ORMC she then was released to Valley View for rehab treatment. The place is not pretty physically but the care she received was off the charts. She came home back to her old self.

Shame on him in what he did. Mike Sweeton wrote a letter to the editor endorsing him recently praising him for his character and integrity or something to that effect. Really Mike? I guess that’s just excluding what he did re Valley View which displayed neither of those qualities.

What is so amazing to me is that none of them can do any thinking at all , they just do as they are told and don't open their mouth, yet they can LIE all day long on the issue just so they can get re-elected and go about doing as they are told when back in! GOD BLESS those that fought and saved Valley View for all of us that are older and may need it.

Nephew Chris brings us to the point:these candidates say one thing, do another and then take credit for the very thing they did NOT do!!!
And yet, some misguided folk will vote for them!!!
And you thought Auntie's job was easy...

Auntie removed the last two posts because they were purely partisan and not up to team standards.
Stick to the issues and remember not all democrats are angels.

Some politicians would have you think that not getting caught in a lie is the same as telling the truth.
